Dealing with illness, setbacks

running with the flu is no funI found myself with a narrow window of opportunity to get my run in to help complete my half-marathon training plan. I’d gotten about four hours worth of sleep (divided in several parts) due to annoyingly loud neighbors, had plans in the morning and evening, which left about an hour and a half to squeeze a run in.

In other words, it was either run or take a nap. I took a nap.

The following day, when I was scheduled to run my long slow distance run, I woke up more tired than when I went to sleep and my body wracked with the soreness usually associated with the flu.

So I slept.

Dealing with injuries and illness and other setbacks are the boon of training plans. Unfortunately, life happens. I saw a quote once that said if you want to do something, you’ll find the time. If you don’t, you’ll find excuses.

But there’s a balance to be found here. There’s a time to push through, if you’re a little tired or sore, and there’s a time to rest, like when illness strikes. Knowing the difference between the two is the key to keeping yourself motivated and healthy.

So I rested Sunday, even though it drove me nuts. I woke up Monday feeling well-rested and ready to hit it hard. And wouldn’t you know it, I’ve had one of my better weeks. I hope you will too.
